Title A name given to the resource In Situ Archaeological Evaluation of the CSS Georgia Savannah Harbor, Georgia Abstract A summary of the resource. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, operates and maintains the Savannah Harbor Navigation Project and, in partnership with the Georgia Ports Authority, is examining the feasibility of deepening the Savannah Harbor navigation channel. To ensure compliance with various federal and state statutes, the Savannah District has re-initiated studies of the CSS Georgia shipwreck, a National Register of Historic Places listed site. Locally built in 1862 and originally designed as an ironclad gunboat, Georgia was moored in the Savannah River opposite Fort Jackson approximately five miles down river from the City of Savannah. Designated a “Floating Battery,” the vessel served as an integral element of Confederate defenses that protected Savannah until General W. T. Sherman’s Union Army captured the city. After a 20-month operational life, Georgia was scuttled in December 1864 to prevent capture by advancing Union troops. Title A name given to the resource Mechanized Recovery of CSS Georgia Description An account of the resource Mechanized Recovery of CSS Georgia, by Jeremy Buddemeier, USACE, Savannah District. The mechanized portion is one of the final phases of the CSS Georgia’s recovery that will remove the ironclad prior to deepening the Savannah harbor. Workers use a five-finger grapple and clamshell scoop to raise material from the river bottom that was either too heavy or buried during previous phases of the recovery. After the objects are deposited onto the barge, a team of archaeologists sifts through the muddy mess using rakes, shovels and fire hoses, spraying the excess through grates on the side of the barge. In addition to several sections of casemate and an unexpected 9,000-pound Dahlgren cannon, archaeologists have recovered a sword hilt, gold-guilded buttons from uniforms, intact bottles and ceramics, and personal items like shoes and a belt buckle. Archaeologists expect to complete mechanized recovery phase by the first week in November, and will continue conservation efforts at Texas A&M University’s Conservation Research Laboratory. This drone footage was taken from Old Fort Jackson where the Civil War Ironclad CSS Georgia is currently being recovered adjacent to the fort from the barge in the Savannah River. The imagery was captured during the “CSS Georgia ‘Raise the Wreck!’ Festival,” a public event held July 25, 2015 at Old Fort Jackson in Savannah, Ga. More than 1,300 people attended this free event. The festival highlighted the ongoing recovery of the CSS Georgia, and its history. Underwater archeology is currently taking place in the river where the vessel was scuttled, and where the barge in this video is positioned. About the CSS Georgia: The historical vessel was an ironclad gunboat built in Savannah for the Confederacy in 1862. The vessel was used as a floating battery anchored at Fort Jackson to protect the City of Savannah from a Union naval approach. Confederate troops scuttled the vessel in December 1864 during the approach of General William T. Sherman's Union troops.
